It is a discipline of surgery having a central core of knowledge embracing anatomy, physiology, pathology, wound healing, shock, resuscitation, intensive care, and neoplasia, which are common to all surgical specialties.

  • The department of general surgery handles all major emergencies and planned surgical procedures including surgeries related to the pancreas, the liver and gastrointestinal tract.
  • State of the art operation theatres, sophisticated instruments and technologies leave an imprint on patients when they leave the premise after successful treatment.
  • Undergraduates are taught basic surgical skills like suturing, knotting, venous cut down, catheterization, etc. they are also allowed in operation theatres to observe surgical procedures. In the department of general surgery, postgraduates learn the subject through real time exposure to common as well as rare cases and they form integral part of decision making process in the management. A special highlight is the experience they earn through Operation Theatre procedures, wherein they are allowed to observe and assist major surgical procedures. They are allowed to do some surgical procedures independently under senior supervision. Emergencies too provide an effective learning platform.
  • Postgraduates also have access to the advanced learning center where they learn Laparoscopic skills and advanced surgical skills.
